Shalakya Tantra, one of the eight branches of Ayurveda, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the regions above the neck, especially the eyes, ears, nose, throat and head. Among these, Netra Roga (eye diseases) holds significant importance, as vision is one of the most vital senses. Shalakya Tantra is a testament to the advanced medical knowledge of ancient Ayurvedic practioners. By focusing on the health of the eyes, it provides comprehensive care for sensory organ disorders. As we continue to integrate traditional wisdom with modern science, Shalakya Tantra stands as a holistic, time tested approach to maintaining and restoring the health of our vital sensory system. Its therapies, diagnostic techniques and surgical contribution make it an invaluable part of Ayurvedic medicine with ongoing significance in today’s healthcare landscape.
Shalakya Tantra identifies several eye diseases and categorizes them based on the affected Dosha and Site. Some of the most common eye conditions include: Abhishyanda, Adhimantha, Timira, Kacha, Linganasha, Pothaki, Avrana and Savrana Shukla, Pakshmakopa and other Pitta Doshaja Netra Rogas. With the rise of digital devices and increased screen time, eye-related issues have become more prevalent in today’s world. Conditions like Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), dry eyes, and eye strain are becoming common due to prolonged exposure to blue light from screens. In such cases, Ayurvedic therapies like Netra Tarpana and Nasya Karma offer excellent solutions for soothing and rejuvenating the eyes. The integration of traditional Ayurvedic therapies with modern ophthalmic practices can provide holistic eye care, addressing not only the symptoms but also the root causes of eye diseases.
Shalakya Tantra’s approach to Netra Roga offers a well-rounded, natural solution for maintaining and improving eye health. By addressing the root causes of eye disorders through diet, lifestyle changes, and therapeutic procedures, Ayurveda provides effective treatments for a wide range of conditions, from common eye strain to serious diseases like cataracts and glaucoma. In today’s fast-paced, digital world, the wisdom of Shalakya Tantra can be a valuable tool for preserving the gift of sight and promoting long-term eye health. With regular preventive care and the help of Ayurvedic therapies, one can maintain clear, healthy vision and prevent the onset of many eye disorders.
