The 10th edition of the World Ayurveda Congress (WAC) is set to focus on one of the most profound branches of Ayurveda: Shalya Tantra. This ancient science of surgery has been integral to Ayurveda’s contribution to global healthcare. Choosing Shalya Tantra as the theme highlights its relevance not only in historical contexts but also in modern medical practice.
A Tribute to Sushruta’s Legacy
Shalya Tantra traces its roots to the great Ayurvedic surgeon Acharya Sushruta, often referred to as the “Father of Surgery.” His treatise, Sushruta Samhita, remains a seminal text, outlining sophisticated surgical techniques and instruments that were centuries ahead of their time. The theme for the 10th WAC honours this rich heritage, emphasizing how these ancient principles are still applied in today’s surgical procedures. Sushruta’s work laid the foundation for plastic surgery, rhinoplasty, and other many complex surgeries. Sushrut’s principles of wound management, Ksharasutra, Blood letting and Agnikarma are being practiced worldwide.
Bridging Tradition and Modernity
In an era where modern surgical techniques dominate, Shalya Tantra serves as a bridge between traditional and contemporary surgical approaches. WAC’s focus on this theme demonstrates Ayurveda’s adaptability and relevance in modern healthcare systems. By integrating traditional wisdom with modern advancements, we can explore new dimensions of patient care, particularly in areas like wound management, urinary disorders, post-surgical recovery, and minimally invasive techniques.
Expanding Research Horizons
Shalya Tantra is not just about the past but is a field ripe for research and innovation. The 10th WAC provides a platform for scholars, practitioners, academicians, and researchers to delve into new areas, such as regenerative medicine, and how Ayurvedic surgical principles can complement modern techniques. The event is expected to foster discussions on how Ayurveda can contribute to holistic surgical care, from pre-operative preparations to post-operative healing.
A Global Perspective on Ayurvedic Surgery
With participants from across the globe, the Congress will showcase how Shalya Tantra is being practiced worldwide. This global perspective will encourage the exchange of knowledge and experiences, promoting collaboration between Ayurvedic surgeons and modern medical practitioners. The theme also reinforces Ayurveda’s global impact and its potential role in transforming healthcare systems by offering sustainable, patient-centric approaches.
